Project Overview
Date: Several trainings in roughly 2020
Location: Various locations in Kenya
Trainer: Peter Otiende
Circumstances
- Communities struggled to grow vegetables, especially during the dry season.
- Malnutrition and other health issues were prevalent.
- Families lacked sufficient funds for school fees and other essential expenses.
Positive Changes
The permagarden training led by Peter Otiende brought transformative changes to communities across Kenya:
- Families saved $50–$78 per month by not purchasing vegetables.
- Benter Achieng: “During the school holidays, I was hosting 15 of my grandchildren plus four other family members, and the vegetables I grow in my 4×4 meter permagarden were able to feed all of us for two months. My vegetables never dried during the drought. I really thank The Permagardens Foundation for helping us. The money I saved I used to buy some chickens.”
- Mary Anyango: “For the past 7 months, I have never gone to the market to buy vegetables. I have been eating fresh vegetables from my garden, and this has helped me to save money and even time. My children are very healthy as we no longer have malnutrition, which used to be a serious problem. I also want to say that the training we got from The Permagardens Foundation has opened our minds, and now we are better than before. We are very very grateful for this project.”
- Trainees reported: “No hunger at all. We have never missed a meal in the last seven months.”
- Improved health outcomes, with no malnutrition and fewer doctor visits.
- Daily harvests were possible throughout the three-month dry season.
- Trainees began helping neighbors build their own permagardens, spreading the impact.
